Summary
  • Audi is testing a new entry-level electric hatch to replace the outgoing A1 and Q2.
  • The EV will use Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, sharing architecture with models like the ID.3.

Audi is testing a new entry-level electric hatch that will become the marque’s smallest car and indirectly replace the outgoing A1 and Q2. Spotted in prototype form, the EV wears Q4 e-tron–like proportions with clear visual nods to the 1999–2005 A2; it’s expected to ride on Volkswagen Group’s MEB architecture and go on sale next year.

What we know so far

  • Prototype spotted: Autocar’s spy photographers caught the new Audi testing on public roads; the car appears as a compact Q4-style silhouette with A2-inspired design cues.
  • Positioning: The model will be Audi’s smallest offering and is intended to sit beneath the A3, effectively covering the roles of the retiring A1 and Q2. It will compete with the BMW iX1 and the second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA EV.
  • Name possibilities: Because it will not be a direct like-for-like replacement, Audi could assign a new name — and resurrecting the A2 badge is being considered. CEO Gernot Döllner previously said redeploying historic names was “thinkable.”

Platform and likely tech

Audi’s new smallest EV is expected to use the Volkswagen Group MEB family of platforms (the same architecture underpinning models such as the ID.3 and Q4 e-tron), which gives Audi flexible battery and drivetrain options while keeping costs competitive across the volume end of the market. Dimensionally it will sit close to compact crossover/hatch rivals such as the Skoda Elroq. Final battery sizes and range figures are not yet published.

Design: Q4 proportions with A2 DNA

Spy images show a compact body that echoes the Q4 e-tron’s stance but with sharper, A2-style cues — a compact footprint, plenty of glass and an emphasis on clean, simple surfaces. The A2 influence is visible in the car’s overall profile rather than direct retro styling; expect premium material and detailing to differentiate it from VW Group siblings.

Why Audi is doing this

Audi is simplifying its portfolio and focusing on a clearer, premium line-up — consolidating the A1 and Q2 roles into a single, more focused entry model helps the brand preserve margin and sharpen its electric offering. Döllner has stated that smaller segments will be handled across the Volkswagen Group, enabling Audi to concentrate on a streamlined product mix with a distinct premium pitch.

Market rivals and expected positioning

  • Rivals: BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz GLA EV (2nd gen), and premium variants of Volkswagen Group small EVs.
  • Positioning: Audi will aim for a “true premium” offering in the A-segment — higher quality materials, bespoke tuning and brand-specific features to justify a price premium over mainstream MEB-based siblings.
